Choosing To Stay Schtum

Published on 7 September 2025 at 21:07

Ever since Davina McCall's first menopause documentary, Sex, Myths and the Menopause, was released in 2021 on Channel 4, women have been more comfortable talking about the menopause, it’s symptoms and HRT therapy. It’s no longer a shameful period that occurs to women. Thanks to Davina, we have become wide open in discussing the menopause, comparing notes and often trying to make light of its often unbearable symptoms.

But just like the menopause where no two women are likely to suffer identical symptoms, not every woman is comfortable talking about their experiences going through it. Lately in company with other women, do you find no matter what the occasion or event, the conversation circles around to talking about the menopause? Sure, it’s one thing we all have in common and not many escape unscathed. But some women are private and prefer not to discuss the menopause or anything else too personal in an open forum. So next time you see someone staying schtum in conversation about the menopause, it may not be that they are embarrassed or covering it up. Maybe they just don’t wanna talk about it.
