The Good Weed

Published on 13 August 2025 at 12:51

Dandelions are wild perennial weeds that sprout up in every garden, particularly during the Spring and Summer months. Our brains are conditioned to dislike their rapid growth as well as their strong rooting systems and unattractive leaves they display. On the other hand their vivid yellow flowers add a bright yellow glow even to the most mundane green fields and meadows. And more than just a weed...

Dandelions offer several environmental benefits, primarily as a valuable food source for pollinators such as bees providing essential pollen and nectar, butterflies and other insects. Their annoying deep roots aerate the soil improving drainage & circulation and their decomposed form fertilises the soil.

For humans, there are many health benefits to consuming dandelions. The greens are a good source of vitamins A and K, folate, calcium and potassium. The roots, leaves and flowers have many antioxidant properties that assist with body detoxification. It is also scientifically proven that dandelions as a whole may manage blood pressure, reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol and blood sugar.

You will find dandelion supplements and tinctures in most health food stores and dandelion tea is widely available in supermarkets. As always, consult your doctor with any health concerns and take all supplements as directed and in moderation.
