Salt Shakin' Flaps

Published on 13 August 2025 at 11:55

You know those moments when you feel your upper arm flapping as you shake salt and pepper on the delicious meal you're about to eat. Maybe it’s a plate of french fries, a mound of creamy mashed potatoes or possibly something a little more healthy like a piece of fish or bowl of tomato soup. Either way, the flabby flaps are an icky feeling and an instant reminder that it’s time to start toning up.

As women age, we lose muscle mass. Not a new phenomenon but one I only discovered as I approached 50. So what are the options to stay toned? Lifting weights, pulling elastics and punching a bag all sound worth a go. But I can’t help but wonder if it’s a little too late to start working out over 40 in a desperate attempt to wear that sleeveless top or strappy dress again. Should women lay a shapely foundation in their youth in order to stay toned & conditioned when older?

Having done some research, the good news is that it’s never too late to start toning body muscle. So curling, pressing & lifting may be worth the effort with a healthy dose of time and commitment.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started -

  • Start slow.
  • Choose weights / resistance training equipment that suit your goal & ability.
  • Gradually build up resistance using your chosen training routine.
  • Work out consistently 2 - 3 times per week. This is the only way you'll see results.
  • Listen to your body & don't overdo it.
  • Be cautious! If you have any injuries or weaknesses, consult your doctor.
  • Combine your workout with a healthy diet.

If you can, discuss a workout plan with a personal trainer or gym instructor. Alternatively do a little online searching a find a workout that suits you and more importantly, one you enjoy!
