The Fountain Of Youth

As a woman, how is it possible to accept the changes that occur over 50, particularly from the neck up? Every woman is different with varying levels of ageing depending on lifestyle, environment, health and genetics. Many choose to have surgery or go down the road of botox and fillers. But what other options are there to fix or disguise the ageing face?

Over-the-counter anti-ageing lotions and potions are a multi-billion industry. Some of them do what they say on the tin filled with active ingredients to hydrate and plump the skin. But their effectiveness is only slight and not significant enough to fully regain that smooth jowl, velvety upper lip and supple neck. Do supplements work? Social media has post after post promoting oral collagen, hyaluronic acid and other vitamin cocktails but I’m not entirely convinced that these work with lack of available evidence to support their efficacy.

The general consensus is that the pressure to remain looking youthful is societal. True. But looking in the mirror and seeing changes occur can be hard to swallow regardless of the age-shaming messages perpetuated by society. We tend to judge ourselves in comparison to how we used to look and not against others who are younger or ageing better.

It is important to remind ourselves that ageing is a natural process and one thing that we all have in common. Maybe it’s time to stop thinking of it as an infliction but instead a reward for being healthy and alive.

And in the meantime, here are some tips that I found online that might help you & me:

  • Follow a daily skin routine no matter what products you use - cleanse, tone & moisturize. Choose a product that works for you.
  • Wear SPF facial moisturizer daily (+30) - there are many on the market.
  • Try face yoga moves - here are 2 videos I like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LONbNTnF1OQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etcxfF-Yu2Q
  • Implement physical exercise into your daily routine including a high intensity/aerobic workout 3 times a week.
  • Eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants. Avocados, tomatoes, blueberries, fatty fish, nuts, and leafy greens are excellent choices (& will benefit general health).
  • Drink plenty of water - 3 litres per day. Remember this will assist with hydration and absorption of nutrients. Any visible effects on the skin are subtle and may take some time to show.
  • A good night's sleep is essential to assist with ageing  - if you can, try to get 7-9 hours per night.
  • Other tips that we all know - reduce or manage stress, alcohol-intake, smoking and the consumption of processed foods.
